Doutzen Kroes is a Dutch model and Victoria's Secret Angel, known for her curvy figure, who has appeared in campaigns for brands including Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Versace, and Tiffany & Co.
Born in the town of Eastermar, in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands, on January 23, 1985, Kroes signed to Amsterdam-based modelling agency Paparazzi after graduating from high school.
Her native language is the West Frisian dialect of her mother tongue.
In her first few seasons as a model, Kroes appeared in campaigns for luxury labels including Gucci, Tommy Hilfiger, Escada, Dolce & Gabbana, Valentino, Versace, Hugo Boss, Guerlain, Bottega Veneta, De Beers, GAP, Gianfranco Ferre, and Neiman Marcus.
She also appeared on the catwalk for design houses from Bottega Veneta, Christian Dior, Christian Lacroix, Dolce & Gabbana, Dsquared and Fendi, to Jean Paul Gaultier, John Galliano, Louis Vuitton, Marc Jacobs, Roberto Cavalli, Prada, Valentino, and Versace.
Kroes has since admitted that her natural curves made fitting in to the tiny sample sizes required by such designers challenging: "I was 18 when I started. I probably fit a sample size once when I was 11 or 12. Now I am 25. I am always told I should lose weight." She decided not to lose weight and has built her career on having "curves" instead.
In 2005, Kroes joined a list of alumni which includes Gisele Bundchen and Heidi Klum when she appeared on the Victoria's Secret catwalk. She has appeared in lookbooks and on the catwalk for the lingerie label every year since and in 2008 was officially made a Victoria's Secret Angel. She appeared in her first campaign the same year alongside fellow Angel Adriana Lima.
Also in 2005, Kroes was selected as Model of The Year by US Vogue readers and was subsequently featured on the cover of the May 2007 issue of the magazine, alongside models including Hilary Rhoda, Caroline Trentini, Raquel Zimmermann, Sasha Pivovarova, Agyness Deyn, Coco Rocha, Jessica Stam, Chanel Iman, and Lily Donaldson, as the new crop of "supermodels."
Kroes joined a league of the world's most important models in 2008 when she was chosen to appear in the notoriously covered-up Asian-inspired 2008 Pirelli Calendar, along with Gemma Ward, Lily Donaldson, Agyness Deyn, Coco Rocha and Sasha Pivovarova, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier.
In July 2007, earning at an estimated total of $4.9 million in the past twelve months, Forbes named Kroes fourteenth in the list of the World's 15 Top-Earning Supermodels. By April 2008, she had climbed to fifth position, with an estimated income of $6 million, a position which she retained in the May 2009 and 2010 lists. SEE THE WORLD'S HIGHEST PAID MODELS HERE
Also in May 2009, Kroes received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Dutch Model Awards in Amsterdam.
Kroes took part in the CFDA's 2010 discussion panel on health - focusing on the impact of sample sizes on the size zero debate, entitled The Beauty Of Health: Resizing The Sample Size.
In February 2010, Kroes returned to the catwalk during Milan Fashion Week for Prada with fellow Angels Alessandra Ambrosio and Miranda Kerr. The show was widely discussed in the media for its use of more womanly models along with the more traditional young sample size girls.
